Luxembourg: Participation of the Minister for Migration and Asylum Mr. Notis Mitarachi in the EU Home Affairs Council <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr. Notis Mitarachi, participated today in the works of the EU Home Affairs Council, held in Luxembourg.The Council’s agenda included issues related to the ongoing negotiation of the European Migration and Asylum Pact, cooperation with neighboring third countries on migration management, and the new European Schengen strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Mr. Mitarachi reiterated the position of Greece, which is a common position of the five Mediterranean host countries, that a balance needs to be struck between the important commitments made by the Member States at the EU’s external borders and the substantial solidarity that should be demonstrated by all Member States in the logic of a fair burden-sharing of migrants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In fact, he noted that front-line states should not be expected to guard the borders effectively, provide adequate reception conditions, register arrivals, process asylum applications, return those who are not entitled to protection, without the necessary support and practical solidarity of all European countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Regarding cooperation with neighboring countries, the Minister for Migration stressed the importance of achieving smooth cooperation with Turkey on migration, in the context of the full implementation of the 2016 EU-Turkey Joint Declaration, stressing the need for Turkey to meet its obligations, which are to combat smuggling networks, prevent flows and accept returns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In this context, he advocated the need to strengthen FRONTEX cooperation with third countries, including Turkey. He also announced Greece’s recent decision to recognize Turkey as a safe third country for a number of nationalities, including Afghans, Pakistanis and Somalis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, regarding the new EU Schengen strategy, Mr. Mitarachi emphasised the importance of free movement and consolidation of the sense of security within the common European territory, proposing the need to strengthen the
