\u03a4he Minister for Migration and Asylum,  \u039cr. Notis Mitarachi, responding to an invitation from the Minister of the Interior of Austria, Mr. Karl Nehammer, participated in a special ceremony in honor of the members of the Austrian special task force EKO COBRA, who were sent in April 2020, in support of Greek forces, during the attempt of thousands of migrants to cross Evros.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremony held at the Special Forces Center of the Austrian Police, Mr. Mitarachi awarded the head of the Austrian team, Policeman Johann Rieger, with the highest distinction of the Greek State, on behalf of the President of the Republic, Mrs. K. Sakellaropoulou.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his address to the 13-member selected Austrian team, Mr. Mitarachi congratulated its members for the courage and determination with which they operated at the Greek and European external borders on the side of Greek colleagues, sending a strong message of joint action and unity of Europe, against the Turkish provocation and instrumentalization of migration.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This initiative of the Austrian government and the presence of the Cobra group forces in Evros was not only a substantial contribution but also an act of high symbolism with recipients inside and outside the EU<\/em>“, Mr. Mitarachi stressed.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018\u2019What the EKO Cobra unit did back in March 2020, was a strong act of support and solidarity and a decision of great symbolism for the unity of Europe. The relations between Greece and Austria have been very deep throughout the time and I am very happy to say that Austria acted as a good friend and an important partner of Greece last year, through its decision to support the Greek efforts at an extremely critical moment, the orchestrated attempt of the violation of the Greek and European borders by Turkey.<\/em>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That effort of intrumentilizing migration, orchestrated and supported by Turkey, failed thanks to the courageous reaction of our national forces, supported by our European partners, such as Austria. Greece acted as the shield of Europe. But this would not have been possible without the professionalism and resolve of officers like you, who served in Evros region by the side of your Greek colleagues and the forces of FRONTEX.<\/em>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting with the Minister of Interior of Austria, Mr. Karl Nehammer<\/u><\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Mitarachi and Mr. Nehammer held talks in Vienna, focusing on migration, police co-operation and the negotiation of the European Migration and Asylum Pact. Mr Nehammer congratulated Greece on its resolute stance on the protection of the EU’s external borders, noting that it works with perseverance and full respect for European values \u200b\u200bon behalf of all EU Member States.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting with the the Director General of the International Center for Migration Policy (ICMPD) Michael Spindelegger<\/u><\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his visit to Vienna, Mr. Mitarachi met with the Director General of the International Center for Migration Policy (ICMPD) Michael Spindelegger, with whom he discussed the forthcoming accession of Greece to this European forum (19 countries are already members of the Including Turkey) and the development of joint actions in the field of migration management.Mr Mitarachi and Mr. Spindelegger signed the Declaration of Intention of Greece to become a member of the Organization, with which the accession process enters the final phase, pending its ratification by the Greek Parliament.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
