The Minister of Migration and Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarachi, is in Washington, where he had been holding a series of meetings from the 23rd to the 25th of May.
The Minister of Migration and Asylum met with the Assistant Secretary for International Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, Mrs Serena Hoy, while on the same day he had successive meetings at the State Department.
First, with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State overseeing policy for Southern Europe and the Caucasus, Mrs Erika Olson, and consequently with Mrs. Julietta Valls Noyes, Assistant Secretary Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration.
Afterwards, Mr. Mitarachi participated in a round table discussion that took place at the Migration Policy Institute, where the President of the Institute, Mr. Andrew Selee, also took part.
In addition, the Minister of Migration and Asylum visited the World Bank headquarters, where he had a meeting with the Director of Social Protection and Labor of the World Bank, Mr. Michal Rutkowski.
The discussions were constructive and focused on the management of migration, the fight against illegal migration and the promotion of legal, through international cooperation. Mr. Mitarachi presented the ways Greece has been offering help to Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced people from Afghanistan.
Finally, Mr. Mitarachi, before leaving for Athens, will have a working lunch with the distinguished diplomat, professor and leading member of US governments in the past, who is of of Greek origin, Mr. John Negroponte..
