Arrival of 367 Afghan citizens in Athens

Today, 269 Afghan nationals - mostly judges - arrived in Athens via Tbilisi as part of the commitments made by Greece and other EU member states to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghans at risk.

Another flight containing 98 people is expected within the next few hours. All of the 367 Afghan citizens are coming to Greece for temporary accommodation.

The flight was welcomed at the airport "El. Venizelos " airport, by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Themistoklis Demiris, the Secretary General of Μigration Policy Mr. Patroklos Georgiadis, the Deputy Commander of the Asylum Service Mr. Ioannis Sfyrakis and the the Director of the Reception & Identification Service Mrs. Evangelia Ktistaki.

All of the 269 Afghan nationals were subjected to a Covid rapid test upon arrival, recorded and transferred to accommodation.

Τhe transfer to the apartments was carried out with the assistance of the IOM, while their safe transport took place in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
