Malta: Meeting of the Minister of Migration and Asylum Mr. Notis Mitarachi with the Minister of Interior of Malta Mr. Byron Camilleri

The Minister of Migration and Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarachi, met with the Minister of the Interior of Malta, Mr. Byron Camilleri, in Valletta, Malta.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the anniversary conference for the completion of 10 years EASO.

Mr. Mitarachi and Mr. Camilleri discussed the common challenges the two countries face in managing migration as front-line countries.

At the same time, they expressed the common belief that the new European Migration and Asylum Pact which is under negotiation is not a prerequisite for action regarding external relations, border protection and returns.

The two Ministers underlined the need for effective border protection but also for the establishment of a system of solidarity as a prerequisite for a resilient and fair common European migration and asylum policy.

Finally, the Minister of Interior of Malta stressed the need to strengthen cooperation with the Libyan authorities, as most of the flows come from this country.
