The Asylum Service was established by law 3907/2011 and is the first autonomous structure in the country that deals with the examination of international protection applications.
Αποστολή της είναι η εφαρμογή της εθνικής νομοθεσίας για την παροχή πολιτικού ασύλου και άλλων μορφών διεθνούς που έχουν εγκαταλείψει τη χώρα τους λόγω δικαιολογημένου φόβου δίωξης για λόγους φυλετικούς, θρησκευτικούς, εθνικής καταγωγής, πολιτικών πεποιθήσεων ή συμμετοχής σε ιδιαίτερη κοινωνική ομάδα, οι οποίοι δεν μπορούν ή δεν επιθυμούν να επιστρέψουν στην πατρίδα τους.
Όπως προβλέπει ο νόμος, η Υπηρεσία Ασύλου παραλαμβάνει, εξετάζει και αποφασίζει, βάσει της εθνικής νομοθεσίας και των διεθνών υποχρεώσεων της χώρας, τις αιτήσεις διεθνούς προστασίας που υποβάλλονται στη χώρα μας. Επίσης, συμβάλλει στη διαμόρφωση της εθνικής πολιτικής για τη διεθνή προστασία και τη συνεργασία με διεθνείς οργανισμούς και την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση στους τομείς δραστηριότητάς της.
The Asylum Service is composed of the Headquarters, the Regional Asylum Offices and the Asylum Units. The Headquarters plan, direct, monitor and control the actions of the Regional Asylum Offices and Αsylum Units throughout the country and ensures the necessary conditions for the pursuance of their activities.
The Asylum Service also provides administrative support to the Appeals Authority, which was established by the same law and examines appeals against negative decisions on applications for international protection. Appeals Authority which was also established by the law 3907/2011
Fifty percent of the annual funding needs of the Asylum Service and the Appeals Authority is covered by state funds, while for its remaining needs the Asylum Service applies for funding to the European Commission and the European Economic Area. In 2013, the Asylum Service received funding from the European Commission and UNHCR, The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2014-2020, EEA Grants 2009-2014 and other resources
Από τον Απρίλιο του 2018, Διοικητής της Υπηρεσίας Ασύλου είναι ο Μάρκος Καραβίας. Από το 2012 μέχρι και το Φεβρουαρίου 2018, διευθύντρια της Υπηρεσίας Ασύλου ήταν η Μαρία Σταυροπούλου.
