Mitarachi: "We must reach an agreement on modalities of border protection"

The Minister of Migration and Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarachi, was in Brussels, where he participated in the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union.

Main subjects on the agenda were among others, the progress in the negotiations on the new Migration and Asylum Pact, the external dimension of the migration crisis and the European Union's policy on returns and the issue of the displaced from Ukraine.

The Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum has once again stood by Turkiye's stance on the Migration Issue, specifically stating that it "explicitly refuses to implement the provisions of the EU-Turkiye Readmission Agreement of 2016 which oblige it to accept the returns of third-country nationals".

Mr. Mitarachi emphasized once again the necessity for practical solidarity of the European states as long as it concerns the equal distribution of third country nationals who have entered the first reception countries, such as Greece, by calling the partners into "agreement on modalities of border protection".

Finally, Mr. Mitarachi met with the Ministers of Migration and Ministers of the Interior while also attended the working lunch, where the improvement of European Union’s policy on returning migrants was discussed.
