Participation of the Minister of Μigration and Asylum Mr. Νotis Mitarachi at the works of the Informal Council of EU Ministers of Interior and `Migration, which took place in Lille, France
The Minister of Migration and Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarachi, participated today in the Informal Council of EU Ministers of Interior and Migration, which took place in Lille, France.
The key issue on the Council's agenda was the ongoing negotiations regarding the new European Migration and Asylum Pact.
During his speech, the Minister of Migration and Asylum applauded the initiatives of the French Presidency and stressed that Greece and the front line countries MED5, are committed to work constructively, so that the negotiations can move forward and overcome the stalemate observed in some thorny issues.
The Minister for Migration and Asylum made the following statement:
‘’Συνεχίζεται η διαπραγμάτευση για το νέο Σύμφωνο Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου. Οι θέσεις της Ελλάδας είναι ξεκάθαρες. Πρώτον, πρέπει να προστατεύσουμε τα εξωτερικά μας σύνορα, ειδικά όταν συνεχίζεται η προσπάθεια εκμετάλλευσης του μεταναστευτικού από την γείτονα χώρα. Οι δηλώσεις της τουρκικής ηγεσίας ήταν απαράδεκτες για το τραγικό περιστατικό που άνθρωποι έχασαν τη ζωή τους στην Τουρκία, καθώς προσπαθούσαν να περάσουν τα ευρωπαϊκά σύνορα. Είναι ευθύνη της Τουρκίας να αποτρέψει τις παράνομες αναχωρήσεις. Το δεύτερο σημαντικό για την Ελλάδα είναι η αλληλεγγύη. Πρέπει το νέο Σύμφωνο να μοιράσει το βάρος της μεταναστευτικής κρίσης σε όλες τις χώρες της ΕΕ. Οι δύο θέσεις της Ελλάδας είναι ισχυρές και έτσι συνεχίζουμε την διαπραγμάτευση.’’
