How to collect your residence permit

  • You will collect your residence permit from a specific Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit which will be indicated in an announcement on the Asylum Service website.
  • When the new residence permits are ready, announcements are made. To check if your residence permit is ready you should look at the recent announcements in Ready Residence Permits using your case number.
  • You will need to come at the specific time and day and to the specific Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit, as stated in the notice.
  • You must come in person. to collect your residence permit. You cannot send someone else.

When you go to collect your residence permit, you should bring the following with you:

  • The proof of receipt of documents that the Passport Office gave you.
  • The International Protection Applicant Card in the form of a valid smart card, which you must surrender to the competent Asylum Service’s Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit, upon receipt of your residence permit.

Residence permit of your family members

If your family members are also granted international protection (refugee status or subsidiary protection) they will have to apply at a Passport Office to collect their printed residence permits by presenting the above documents. They must come to the Passport Offices in person to apply. Residence permits are individual.

There are some cases where your family members may obtain a residence permit even though they are not granted international protection (refugee status or subsidiary protection). These cases are described below:

  • If you had a child in Greece or in another country, your child can obtain a residence permit. In this case, you must apply to the competent Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit for a residence permit for your child, by presenting a copy of the birth certificate or identification document of your child, or, in the case of a child born outside Greece, a certificate equivalent to the birth certificate provided for by the legislation of the country of birth of the child, in a clear photocopy of a copy issued by the foreign authorities, certified by a lawyer and officially translated. You will then apply for a printout of the child’s residence permit at the Passport Offices, as described above.
  • If you get married or enter into a civil partnership after entering Greeceyour spouse or partner may obtain a residence permit. In this case, both of you must submit an application to the competent Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit by producing the following documents:

    a) a copy of the marriage certificate of the marriage contracted in Greece with a holder of a valid residence permit or a certificate of the civil partnership contracted in Greece a holder of a valid residence permit, accompanied by the registration certificate. In the case of a marriage or civil partnership contracted outside Greece, a certificate equivalent to the above issued by the Foreign Authority as provided for by the legislation of that country, in a clear photocopy certified by a lawyer and officially translated;

    b) a copy of the spouse’s passport or valid travel document. If there is an objective impossibility of obtaining this due to special circumstances or situations, this must be declared in writing;

    c) a copy of the spouse’s valid residence permit.

    You will then apply as described above for a printout of your residence permits at the Passport Offices.

  • If your family members came to Greece through the “family reunification” procedure, they can obtain a residence permit if they present their original passport or travel document to the Asylum Service, and have their original visa for their entry into the country with them. They will then have to apply as described above for a printout of their residence permits at the Passport Offices.

For more information on the above please contact the Regional Asylum Offices or Asylum Units.

How to renew your residence permit

  • In order to renew your residence permit, you must apply no later than thirty (30) calendar days before the expiry of your residence permit at the Asylum Unit for Beneficiaries of International Protection.
  • In case of late, unjustified application for renewal, a fine of one hundred (100) euro shall be imposed.
  • If you cease to be a refugee or a beneficiary of subsidiary protection, your residence permit cannot be renewed.

The renewal process for residence permits involves 4 steps:

     You apply for renewal via e-mail to the Beneficiaries’ Asylum Unit

     You receive a reply by e-mail from the Beneficiaries’ Asylum Unit

     You submit additional documents to a Passport Office

     You collect your renewed residence permit from a Regional Asylum Office or an Asylum Unit

  • In case of a late application, any documents justifying the late renewal request should be attached to the e-mail (GAS.residencepermits@migration.gov.gr). The renewal request is considered late if it is sent to the e-mail address of the Beneficiaries’ Asylum Unit less than thirty (30) days before the expiry date of your residence permit or after its expiry.

  • Detailed instructions on how to send your renewal application are to be found here (INSTRUCTIONS).These instructions are available in: English, Arabic, Farsi, Tigrinia, Urdu and French.

  • In the case of late, unjustified application for renewal, a fine of one hundred (100) euro shall be imposed by a fine decision of the Asylum Unit for Beneficiaries of International Protection, which will be sent to you along with the reply to your e-mail. • Two (2) recent Greek passport type photographs
    • Proof of payment of the administrative fine in case of late payment without justification for submitting a renewal application

At the Passport Office you will get a receipt for the documents you submit. You should not lose it because you need it to collect your renewed residence permit.

You collect your renewed residence permit from a Regional Asylum Office or an Asylum Unit

  • The reply you received via e-mail from the Beneficiaries’ Asylum Unit will also specify which Regional Asylum Office (or Asylum Unit) you should collect your renewed residence permit from (according to your place of residence).
  • To check whether your permit has been renewed and to collect it, you should follow the notices of the Asylum Service on  Renewed Residence Permits. You can check if your residence permit has been renewed by searching with your original residence permit number.
  •  The notice containing your original residence permit number will specify the date and time you must collect your renewed residence permit.
  • You must come on the specific day and time as stated in the notice to collect your renewed residence permit.
  • You must come in person, you cannot send someone else to collect it.
