Residence Permits (ADET type)

  • If you have been granted refugee status from the Hellenic Republic you can acquire a residence permit that is valid for three (3) years. In order to renew your residence permit you need to apply by email thirty (30) calendar days before it expires at the Asylum Unit of International Protection Beneficiaries.
  • If you are a beneficiary of subsidiary protection, your residence permit is valid for one (1) year and can be renewed for two (2) more years.
  • When you obtain international protection (refugee status or subsidiary protection) you have the right to a residence permit. You will receive a document from the supervisor of the Regional Asylum Office that contains the decision of the Asylum Service that states that you have been granted a residence permit (ADET).
  • After you receive the above decision, in order to obtain the actual physical residence permit you have to submit an application to Passport Offices.

How to submit an application in order to obtain your physical residence permit (ADET):

  • You have to submit an application to a Passport Office according to your area of residence.

You bring with you at the Passport Office the following documents:

    • An exact copy of the original decision document provided by the supervisor of the Regional Asylum Office that shows that the Asylum Service has decided the issue of your residence permit.
    • Your International Protection Applicant’s card with the stamp “Residence Permit is Pending.” You will get this stamp from the Regional Asylum Office.
    • A recent passport of Greek passport type.
    • Your fingerprints will also be taken.
    • You don’t have to submit any other document or pay an administrative fee.

You will receive a receipt from the Passport Office for the documents you submitted. You should not lose this receipt as you will need to provide it to the Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit when you pick up our residence permit.

How to pick up your physical residence permit (ADET)

  • You have to pick up your residence permit at the time and date as specified in the announcement that contains your case number.
  • You have to go to the Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit to pick up your residence permit in person. You can not send someone else on your behalf.
  • You also have to wear a mask when you visit the Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit to pick up your residence permit.

When you pick up your residence permit you have to bring with you the following:

  • The receipt you received from the Passport Office for the documents you submitted.
  • Your International Protection Applicant’s card with the stamp “Residence Permit is Pending,” that you have to give to the Regional Asylum Office when you receive your residence permit.

The residence permits of your family

If the members of your family have international protection (refugee status or subsidiary protection) they have to apply to Passport Offices in order to receive their physical residence permit and submit the documents described above. They must come in person to apply. Residence permits are individual.

In some cases the members of your family may be eligible for a residence permit although they don’t have international protection (refugee status or subsidiary protection). These cases are described below:

  • If you had a child before you came to Greece,your child is eligible for a residence permit. In this case, in order to obtain a residence permit for your child you have to submit an application to the competent Regional Asylum Office. You also have to submit a certified copy of the birth certificate of the child. Afterwards you have to apply to Passport Offices as described above in order to obtain the physical residence permit for your child.
  • If you have international protection and you got married or had children after you came to Greece,these members of your family are eligible for a residence permit. In this case you have to submit to the competent Regional Asylum office: an application, a certified copy of the marriage certificate (if you are applying for the residence permit of your spouse), a certified copy of the birth certificate of your child or a child recognition act (if you are applying for the residence permit of your child). Afterwards you have to apply to Passport Offices as described above in order to obtain their physical residence permits. 
  • If members of your family have moved to Greece via the “family reunification process,” they can apply for a residence permit by submitting their original passport or travel document to the Asylum Service. They also have to present to the Asylum Service their entry visa for Greece. Afterwards they have to apply to Passport Offices as described above in order to obtain their physical residence permits.

How to renew your residence permit

  • In order to renew your residence permit you to apply to the Asylum Unit of International Protection Beneficiaries via email, at least thirty (30) calendar days before the expiration of your initial residence permit.
  • If your refugee or subsidiary protection status has been revoked your residence permit cannot be renewed.

The renewal process of your residence permit includes 4 steps/actions:

     You apply via email to the A.U. of Beneficiaries

     You receive a reply via email from the A.U. of Beneficiaries

     You submit supporting documents to the Passport Office (or Alien Office)

     You pick up your renewed residence permit from the Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit

You apply via email to the A.U. of Beneficiaries

  • You have to apply via email to the following email address of the Asylum Unit of International Protection Beneficiaries: GAS.residencepermits@migration.gov.gr
  • You can find the electronic application hereIt is available in Greek and English.
  • You also have to attach to the email a recent digital photo for Greek passports (up to 2 MB).
  • For each member of your family you need to send a separate email with a separate application
  • You must type in the subject area of the email the word «Renewals.» You also need to type the number of your current residence permit in the subject line (e.g., “Renewals_P123456789”).

  • There are additional important instructions regarding the application via email that you can read here (INSTRUCTIONS).These instructions are available in: English, Arabic, Farsi, Tigrinia, Urdu and French.

You receive a reply via email from the A.U. of Beneficiaries

  • Make sure you have given your correct email address in your application as you will receive instructions for the next steps.
  • You will receive a reply via email from the A.U. of Beneficiaries. This reply will be in a language that you understand.
  • The reply will inform you that a positive decision has been issued with regards to the renewal application of your residence permit. The reply will also contain instructions on the next steps.
  • The email reply will refer you to Passport Offices of the Greek Police (or Alien Offices) where you will have to submit additional documents.
  • More specifically, the email reply will mention the specific Passport Office you need to visit and the documents you need to submit to these passport offices.

You submit supporting documents to the Passport Office (or Alien Office)

            You have to bring with you to the Passport Office the following documents:

    • A print out of the email you received
    • The attached file in the email with the instructions
    • Your current residence permit. In case your residence permit has been lost or stolen you have to bring with you the declaration from the police
    • Two (2) recent personal photos (Greek passport type).

You will receive a receipt from the Passport Offices for the documents you have submitted. You must not lose this receipt as you will need it in the last stage when you pick up your residence permit.

You pick up your renewed residence permit from the Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit

  • The email you received from the AU of Beneficiaries will specify from which Regional Asylum Office or Asylum Unit you can pick up your renewed residence permit (according to your area of residence).
  • In order to see if your residence permit has been renewed you have to follow the announcements in  Renewed Residence Permits. You have to search these announcements using the number of your initial residence permit.
  •  The announcement that contains the number of your initial residence permit mentions the day and time you can pick up your renewed residence permit.
  • You have to pick up your residence permit at the specific day and time mentioned in the announcement.
  • You have to come in person.You can’t send someone else on your behalf.
  • You have to wear a mask when you visit the Regional Asylum Office to pick up your residence permit.

You bring with you the following documents in order to receive your renewed residence permit:

  • Your current residence permit that you have to submit to the Regional Office.
  • In case your residence permit was lost or stolen you have to bring the declaration from the police.
  • The receipt (Barcode) you received from the Passport Office for the documents you submitted.
