Mission Statement

The Ministry of Migration and Asylum (MoMA) designs and implements the national migration strategy and holds a leading role in the development of the European Union's migration policy. MoMA's mission is to manage irregular migration mainly stemming from human smuggling, and encourage legal pathways for regular migration under specific conditions and rules, as well as links to the needs of the dynamically developing Greek economy.

In this context, MoMA manages irregular arrivals and takes charge of the reception and identification of asylum seekers, in accordance with international commitments and the Greek law, ensuring the safety of asylum seekers and local communities. Further, MoMA seeks cooperation with countries of origin and transit countries to limit irregular arrivals and combat smuggling and trafficking networks. Finally, MoMA pursues and manages European assistance on migration and supports border protection, utilizing the resources of the Migration & Home Affairs Fund.

MoMA takes initiative on drafting new legislation. Currently, a modernization of the administrative mechanism for legal migration is under way, unifying, simplifying, digitizing and staffing the process of issuing and renewing residence permits. MoMA facilitates the attraction of migrants for labor purposes in Greece, according to the needs of Greek employers, spearheading bilateral transnational labor mobility agreements with friendly countries, and implementing innovative measures.

Finally, MoMA provides specialized care to vulnerable migrant and refugee populations, particularly unaccompanied minors, and implements the national strategy for the integration of migrants and refugees, cooperating with the relevant Ministries, local authorities, and civil society.

Migration is a constant phenomenon, inextricably linked to human civilization. In the past, large populations migrated from Greece to other countries. Today, Greece is at the forefront of pressure from irregular migration.

The Greek migration strategy is based on effective border management, the protection of human life, and the search for European solutions involving the cooperation and solidarity among European peoples and a policy based on European values, with the overall aim of protecting Europe.
