Ο Υπουργός Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου, Θάνος Πλεύρης, υποδέχθηκε σήμερα στο Υπουργείο Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου αντιπροσωπεία του Υπουργείου Εσωτερικής Ασφάλειας των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών (Department of HomelandSecurity – DHS), στο πλαίσιο της διαρκώς ενισχυόμενης συνεργασίας Ελλάδας και ΗΠΑ στον τομέα της μετανάστευσης και της διαχείρισης των σύγχρονων μεταναστευτικών προκλήσεων.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης συζητήθηκαν ζητήματα που αφορούν την αντιμετώπιση της παράνομης μετανάστευσης, την αποτελεσματική εφαρμογή του νέου Ευρωπαϊκού Συμφώνου για τη Μετανάστευση και το Άσυλο, καθώς και η σημασία των επιστροφών ως βασικού πυλώνα μιας αξιόπιστης και αποτελεσματικής μεταναστευτικής πολιτικής. Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δόθηκε στην ανταλλαγή βέλτιστων πρακτικών και εμπειριών μεταξύ των αρμόδιων υπηρεσιών των δύο χωρών, με στόχο την ενίσχυση της επιχειρησιακής τους αποτελεσματικότητας.
Ο Υπουργός υπογράμμισε ότι η Ελλάδα εφαρμόζει μια αυστηρή αλλά δίκαιη μεταναστευτική πολιτική, προστατεύοντας αποτελεσματικά τα εξωτερικά σύνορα της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, επιταχύνοντας τις διαδικασίες ασύλου και δίνοντας ιδιαίτερη βαρύτητα στην ενίσχυση των επιστροφών όσων δεν δικαιούνται διεθνούς προστασίας. Παράλληλα, ανέδειξε τη σημασία της διεθνούς συνεργασίας ως απαραίτητης προϋπόθεσης για την αποτελεσματική αντιμετώπιση της παράνομης μετανάστευσης και των δικτύων διακίνησης.
Η σημερινή συνάντηση αποτελεί συνέχεια της στενής συνεργασίας που έχει αναπτυχθεί μεταξύ του Υπουργείου Μετανάστευσης και Ασύλου και του Department of HomelandSecurity, η οποία τους τελευταίους μήνες έχει ενισχυθεί μέσα από κοινές εκπαιδευτικές δράσεις, ανταλλαγή τεχνογνωσίας και επιχειρησιακή συνεργασία σε θέματα διαχείρισης της παράνομης μετανάστευσης και επιστροφών.
Οι δύο πλευρές επιβεβαίωσαν τη βούλησή τους να συνεχίσουν και να εμβαθύνουν τη συνεργασία τους, αξιοποιώντας την τεχνογνωσία και την εμπειρία που έχουν αναπτύξει, με κοινό στόχο την αποτελεσματική διαχείριση των μεταναστευτικών προκλήσεων, την ενίσχυση της ασφάλειας και την προώθηση νόμιμων και οργανωμένων διαδικασιών μετανάστευσης.

Meeting of the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, with a delegation from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
The Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, welcomed today at the Ministry of Migration and Asylum a delegation from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in the context of the constantly strengthened cooperation between Greece and the US in the field of migration and the management of modern migration challenges.
During the meeting, issues related to the fight against illegal migration, the effective implementation of the new European Pact on migration and Asylum, as well as the importance of returns as a key pillar of a credible and effective migration policy were discussed. Particular emphasis was placed on the exchange of best practices and experiences between the competent services of the two countries, with the aim of enhancing their operational effectiveness.
The Minister underlined that Greece implements a strict but fair migration policy, effectively protecting the external borders of the European Union, accelerating asylum procedures and giving particular importance to strengthening the returns of those who are not entitled to international protection. At the same time, he highlighted the importance of international cooperation as a necessary condition for effectively tackling illegal migration and trafficking networks.
Today’s meeting is a continuation of the close cooperation that has been developed between the Ministry of migration and Asylum and the Department of Homeland Security, which in recent months has been strengthened through joint training actions, exchange of know-how and operational cooperation on issues of managing illegal migration and returns.
The two sides confirmed their will to continue and deepen their cooperation, leveraging the know-how and experience they have developed, with the common goal of effectively managing migration challenges, enhancing security and promoting legal and organized migration processes.
